What if you needed sex – really needed it? You’re addicted to it and you HAVE TO HAVE IT in order to cope? And what if your addiction means the loss of every important relationship you have? You need recovery, and as a part of that recovery, you are told that you cannot – CANNOT – have sex just for sex’s sake.
Such is the dilemma for Lily, a college student whose sexual addictions were first presented in Addicted to You (although the second of this series, you do not have to have read the first one in order to understand the second). Her best friend and lover is Lo, who battles his own addictions. in Lo’s case, though, his demons are more traditional. He’s an alcoholic, and at the start of the novel, he is returning from rehab.
Both Lily and Lo come from affluent families, and Lily’s family has no idea of her addiction. Only a few people do, so when Lo receives a text threatening to tell all about Lily, the mystery begins. Who wants to destroy her? And by destroying her, who wants to destroy Lo?
This is not an easy book to read. Addiction, even sexual, is serious stuff. Lo’s battles with alcohol may be more accessible for us to understand, but Lily’s are by no means simple. She needs sex. It’s how she copes. When she feels overwhelmed or frightened or insecure, she needs the release that sex brings her. It gives her a few minutes of escape from the stresses of her life. Lo realizes this, and as he struggles with his sobriety, he also assumes a sort of protector role for Lily. In fact, per her therapist, they can only have sex on Lo’s terms.
Lily is not used to that AT ALL.
In addition to the two of them, there is a supporting cast of friends and family. The Ritchies know how to write realistic dialogue, which perhaps was my favorite part of the book. You almost feel as if you have pulled up a chair right there with the characters.
And then there are the sexy times. Lo and Lily certainly do rock the headboard, and it’s easy to see why Lily is addicted to it, with Lo at least. He’s focused on her and her needs, and that is a powerful aphrodisiac.
Unfortunately, though, this book just didn’t do it for me. I had a hard time sticking with it and found myself bored on occasion. It felt repetitive to an extent – some of the scenes seem virtually identical to others. The mystery subplot unfolds quite slowly, and by the time it’s resolved, I stopped caring. I wanted to like it more, but I just couldn’t.
Still, though, if you want quick witted dialogue and hot lovin’, this isn’t a bad choice.
About the Authors
Becca Ritchie is a carnivore of pop culture, television, film and of course YA and NA books. While in college, she worked at The CW television network and put her vampiric knowledge to good use, blogging about hit series and swooning over actors’ abs. Krista Ritchie is the mind behind popular trading website YA Book Exchange and created Nawanda Files, a book blog that also features books into movies news. When not pouring over entertainment news and the newest releases, she spends her time conducting research in a genetics lab. She’s happy to join forces with her sister, harnessing their twin powers to produce the first in a New Adult series.
