When you were in high school, did you ever long to be with the hot guy? The star quarterback? The boy every girl wanted to date?

Emmaline Carson sure did. What made it tricky for her was that the boy in question – Cole Marlowe (and what a name … of course he’s going to be gorgeous and swarthy with the name Cole Marlowe) – was her sister’s prom date, and both sets of parents harbor hopes for the two of them.

But time has a way of changing things, and it’s no different for Emma. Spending her college years in Paris helped her transformation, so when she happens to run into Cole in a New York coffee shop, each is surprised to see the other. In Cole’s case, there is instant intrigue and attraction. For Emma, it’s more of a trip back to “then.” All of her hopes and fantasies that went for naught then. What about now, though? Now and Then button

Whatever happens between these two, rest assured that it will not come easily. There is the whole sister thing; Layla continues to be the alpha female in the Carson family, and she still has expectations of being Mrs. Cole Marlowe. Upon consulting Cole, however, she may discover that the feeling is not mutual. Cole might just have developed a thing for the younger sister. And that “thing” might just include some hot sexy times.

This is a fun book to read. Emma is very likable and enjoyable, and Cole is no dullard. I liked seeing the “then” of their lives, those painful high school years in which very little seemed to go right for either of them. That Cole’s life was not as magical as it appeared on the surface makes him more real, and it keeps us reading. The only weak part is Layla, whose bitchiness seems straight out of Central Casting. Let’s just say that you can see why Cole would prefer Emma.

Now and Then (Now #1)
by Brenda Rothert
Release Date: 08/04/13

Summary from Goodreads:

Now Emmaline Carson is a sharp, settled graphic designer who loves painting, cooking and girls’ night out with her older sister Layla. But then – in the years before she went to art school in Paris – she was a shy, awkward teenager with frizzy hair, a flat chest and a massive crush on the boy across the street, Cole Marlowe. Too bad her incredibly hot neighbor only had eyes for Layla.

Cole is now a confident, laid-back attorney who’s even hotter than he used to be. He’s planning to stay single while working his way up the corporate ladder – until he’s knocked off course by a chance run-in with Emma.

Everything is different between Cole and Emma now. He finally sees her in a way she only dreamed of, and their hot chemistry is fueled by a growing friendship. But Emma’s deception of her sister – who wants Cole for herself – and the secret Cole’s been keeping for more than a decade threaten to tear apart what’s only just begun. Because sometimes the only thing standing in the way of now is then.
